Bayanaul is located in the Pavlodar Region (Bayanaul District), about 100 km from the city of Ekibastuz, on the edge of the Central Kazakhstan low mountain range. It is one of Kazakhstan’s specially protected natural areas.
The park was established in 1985, becoming the first national park in Kazakhstan. It was created to preserve and restore the natural flora and fauna of the Bayanaul mountain range.
The clearest and second-largest lake in the area is Zhasybai Lake, nestled in a basin between mountain ridges. Zhasybai is a favorite swimming destination among tourists thanks to its stunning views and crystal-clear water. According to legend, the lake was named after the Kazakh warrior Zhasybai, who died on its shores in a battle against invaders.
Toraigyr Lake is the third largest and the highest in elevation. Its waters are less clear than those of Zhasybai, making it less popular for swimming. However, it is rich in fish—especially carp—making it a prime spot for fishing. The lake was named after the Kazakh poet Sultanmakhmut Toraigyrov, who spent his childhood in the area. A museum dedicated to the poet operates in the nearby village of the same name.
Byrzhankol Lake is the smallest of the four lakes, with a diameter of about 800 meters. The small village of Byrzhankol, home to just 56 residents, lies on its shore. Like Toraigyr, the lake is of interest to anglers, as it contains carp, crucian carp, and common carp. Its name comes from the Kazakh words byr (one), zhan (soul), and kol (lake), which together translate to "Lake of One Soul."
Bayanaul is one of the most popular destinations for tourists, especially from nearby cities in Central and Northern Kazakhstan. The park area features a large number of guest houses and recreation zones. However, most of these facilities offer only basic infrastructure and rather spartan living conditions. In particular, there is no sewage system, cottages lack sources of drinking water and washbasins, and visitors often have to wait in line to use the shower.
